In The Heights: A Rare World Where People Cannot Converse Unless In Song

I am not a fan of Hamilton……….. I’ll leave that to sink in.

When trailers for this film came out and a lot of people started to get very excited for it, I remained cool. After watching I am decidedly more so.

Firstly this is not a film that needs to be seen in cinemas; I am still waiting for a film that will make me say ‘wow this is better than watching it at home’ whilst in the cinema. The sound mixing much like Nolan’s Tenet serve to undermine the film some what and the loudness of the music itself makes the sung dialogue within it almost hard to hear.

Moreover, I don’t like that everything in this film is sung rather than said. Yes, I know it is a musical, but plenty of musicals have scenes of dialogue in between songs- it doesn’t all need to be sung. Almost every conversation in this film is done to music and in a song-like way, which honestly lessens any sort of dramatic impact.

Perhaps most damning of all the songs themselves are not even that good. The first song, the one that has been in all the trailers is passably okay, but after that they take a steep nosedive in quality to a point where it feels like they have given up trying.

Overall, maybe Hamilton fans or diehard musical lovers will be able to get something out of this, I for one just got my time wasted.

Festen/ The Celebration: The Family Reunion From Hell

This film will not be to everyone’s taste, it’s sense of humour is incredibly dark, and some may even find it in bad taste: I however did not.

This is such a bizarre film tonally as you have these incredibly distressing scenes, of suicide and child abuse, cut with other far lighter and almost comedic scenes: both are existing along side the other and both have equal importance. Whilst one would assume this would not work and the two types of scenes would clash horribly, they actually don’t instead working well and nicely complimenting each other.

I found moments in this film to be funny, though the jokes were morbid and will almost certainly not be to everyone’s taste, as I often say comedy is subjective.

What I appreciate the most about this film is how it handles the abuse storyline; it treats it with sombre reverence and shows the often too common reaction to it; disbelief. I thought that the ending of the film where these matters were forced to a head felt strongly emotional and satisfying. Though I found myself depressed by the ending, I would not change it.

Overall, a bizarre film in a lot of ways but one that needs to be seen and experienced.

Another Round/ Druk: Mads Mikkelsen Can Dance

As I said recently in a tweet Mads Mikkelsen is a treasure. If you were not on the Mikkelsen train before, now you are.

There is something so fun and emotionally impactful about this film, yes dark things happen, but there is such an underlying sense of optimism to it that you can’t leave feeling anything other than happy. Honestly, this film made me feel better than any film has in a long time whilst watching it, and it has inspired me to watch more of Vinterberg’s work.

I thought the concept was fascinating, the idea of improving your life by keeping your blood alcohol content above a certain limit throughout the day is genius and is also executed incredibly well. Moreover, this is a beautiful film to look at, this can been seen especially with the final dance sequence that is by far the highlight of the film.

Though I wouldn’t call it a comedy, I thought this film had a number of funny moments scattered in throughout, and it made me smile consistently; it is probably more of a dramady.

Overall, one of the best films I have seen in a long time.

Interview With Actor/ Singer/ Dancer Kaylee Harwood

Hey Everyone, I recently had the chance to talk to Actor/Dancer/Singer Kaylee Harwood, we talk about everything from the Tonys, to life on set, and role preparation.

Q: What has been your favourite production to be a part of so far in your career and why?    

A: My two years on tour with Beautiful: The Carole King Musical definitely offered the most varied of my experiences so far. We played a lot of major cities all over the US and Canada, some of which I’d been to before, and some of which I got to visit for the first time. We’d stay in each city anywhere from one week to two months, which can give you a great sense of a place. For someone like me who loves traveling (on par with my love of performing), it was a huge highlight. Not to mention the incredible music we got to hear and perform every day. I was a swing, which meant I had to keep five roles (including Carole King) in my head at all times. I could be called on to perform anytime, sometimes weeks in advance and sometimes even in the middle of the show. It really kept my creative mind engaged. 

Q: What drew you to the theatre in the first place?  

A: I have always been around the performing arts (watching and doing) but I was relatively late to Theatre. Even though it seems obvious to me now that my interests as a kid were in preparation for the career I have now, I was pretty timid to audition for Theatre, coming from a classical dance and singing background. I had a number of excellent teachers and mentors who helped me bring all these skills together. As an audience member, I am grateful for early exposure to Theatre through my family. Musicals, plays, chamber music, concerts, etc. Certainly once I found my personal love of performing, there was an uptick in the number of productions I attended. Once we’re through this madness of the pandemic, I can’t wait to sit alone with strangers in the dark again. It’s my favourite thing. 

Q: How would you say a theatre production differs from that of a film/game or TV production?

A: So far, I have much more experience in Theatre, but from my time on set and recording VO, the rehearsal time is a huge difference. Not-for-profit Theatre in Canada commonly has about 3 weeks of rehearsals (8 hours per day, 6 days per week) before putting it in front of an audience, and even then we hardly ever feel ready. Stepping onto a set having only rehearsed my lines at home and doing my own personal work is a whole different thing. It’s exciting and only mildly terrifying to know that what you do on the day is preserved for eternity on Netflix for all to see! The anticipation of an audience in Theatre, on the other hand, is exciting and terrifying in its own way. Will they laugh when we think they will? How do we know if this bit is working? That sort of thing. Along those lines, another difference is the exchange with the audience. I love being on stage or in an audience, part of the collective experience. Some people think we can’t hear or see them out there in the darkness, but we sure can. As for VO, I voiced a video game last year and when it finally came out it was fun to find my characters!

Q: What is your process? How do you slip into the mind of your subjects? 

A: I don’t have a strict process that I carry into every role, per se. It’s a varied approach based on the needs of the story or character. I do heaps of research, no matter what. Sometimes I have accent coaching, depending on the role. Sometimes the vocal or physical demands of a role are such that I do specific training, but bare minimum I like to come into any process having done as much prep as possible, with an openness and adaptability to whatever transpires. The key is staying flexible, I think. I don’t perceive my job to be putting on the life of someone else. I think of it more as stripping down to my bare bones, trusting the director to guide with heart, and becoming part of something greater than myself. If I lead with expectation or ego it all just goes badly. 

Q: What do you do in your down time in-between rehearsals? 

A: Pre-shutdown, my M.O. was constant travel. Even when on tour, if I had a few weeks off, I would go somewhere new. Between contracts, I’ve been known to just pick up and fly wherever I could get the cheapest deals, to the point that for the longest time I didn’t have a fixed address. But in recent years I’ve found a slower pace and a lovely landing pad. I’m itching to get back out exploring again once it’s safe. 

Q: Talk us through what an average day is like on set or stage for you?

A: Completely different from each other. Namely the hours. Once I’m into a run of a show, I sleep late, go about my day (if there’s no brush-up rehearsal or matinee), late lunch/early dinner, off to the show, and unwind after. On set, the hours are much longer, and it usually starts earlier with hair and makeup, then wardrobe, blocking rehearsal, chill while they work their magic, then off to the races. Completely different, both excellent. 

Q: Do you have any funny stories?

A: When I was doing the revival of Jesus Christ Superstar on Broadway, we had a bunch of press appearances. I was in the ensemble and we backed up Judas on the title song, which we often performed for TV spots, etc. I had a really neat dress that looked like a tent with all sorts of zippers and pockets and folks always commented on it. One day, we were performing on The View and Whoopi Goldberg got into the elevator right after me and asked where my dress was from. I had to confess that they built it for me. Once off the elevator, I asked Whoopi for a photo, quickly realizing I didn’t have my phone on me (having just performed), so the next words out of my mouth were, “Wait here!” Off I ran to get my phone like such a nerd, and sure enough when I came tearing back around the corner, Whoopi was there waiting. That dress was also a conversation-starter with Jessica Chastain backstage at the Tonys. I was making an entrance from the same wing as her, and like clockwork she asked where the dress was from (she was wearing a stunning gown, of course). I had to break her heart as well. She told me she was very nervous about having to go on stage to present, and I told her I was nervous about dancing, but then my music cue started so there was no time to dilly-dally. 

Q: Who was the most interesting person you have ever worked with?  

A: Maybe only interesting to me, but nonetheless… I did a couple episodes of a TV show called Reign and my first day on set was directed by Megan Follows, who is a legend. Canadian royalty. She starred in the Anne of Green Gables miniseries in the 80s. I had grown up obsessed with this series and like many young Canadians thought I was Anne Shirley. My first day filming, I was all alone, just seen through a castle window, so I didn’t have to pull myself together to say any of my lines, thank goodness. But she came up to introduce herself and I was melted butter.  It was such a full-circle moment, and she was so gracious and encouraging. 

Q: What would be your dream project?

A: I love being part of new work. It’s any actor’s dream, I think, to be in on the ground floor seeing something take shape. I love working with writers in the room, and I feel honoured to have had many opportunities in my career to do so. I think my next dream would be being part of an Original Cast Recording of a new show.

Thor: Natalie Portman’s Second On Screen Stilted Relationship

I am seemingly one of the few people that actually seem to like the first Thor film. I don’t mind the Shakespeare esque dialogue, or the forced romance between Hemsworth and Portman where both look like they hate each other; instead I actually enjoy it.

Firstly yes it is widely known and widely mocked that the chemistry between Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman was not there during this film, however, I actually quite like them together on screen as a pair I think they work well together and could have been a lot more. Maybe Thor 4 can fix it.

I also think though not as zany as in his more recent appearances Thor is still a very likeable lead character and Hemsworth is very charismatic. I like the unworthy arc and the fish out of water style comedy, both work for me. Moreover, I appreciate the family drama between Thor, Odin and Loki I think it works well and makes for one of the best endings in the MCU. Try and tell me watching Loki float away into the void didn’t make you sad.

I also think that Lady Sif and the Warriors Three have huge potential in this film, sadly Marvel seems content on doing nothing with them. What a waste.

Overall, one of the better early MCU films that often gets overlooked in favor of Ragnarök and though I love Taika Waititi as much as the next guy, this film has a lot of stuff going for it as well.

Loki Episode 1 : Glorious Purpose

Though I enjoyed Wandavison’s first episode more so than most, I think this is easily the best first episode of a Marvel Disney + series to date; the reason I did not mention, Falcon And The Winter Soldiers first episode is because it wasn’t very good and proved no real competition to this.

This episode had everything you would want out of a Loki series and then more on top. It has humour, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Owen Wilson’s Mobius have great on screen chemistry together and provide us with quite a few strong comedic scenes. It has heart and depth, such as when variant Loki, who had never seen the events of Thor The Dark World, saw his adoptive mother die for the first time. It also has a promising mystery, and pits Loki against himself.

I thought one of the best things about this episode was the introduction to the Time Variants Authority and the widening of the MCU as this fills in some blanks and also changes how we see the events of the MCU as a whole. The one thing I didn’t like in this respect is that they basically confirm that Agents Of Shield is non-cannon: there is a moment where one additional line of dialogue would have confirmed the shows place in universe, but we never get that conformation.

Finally, outside of Loki and Mobius the rest of the characters are sparse and only really seem to exist to facilitate one purpose and are quite one dimensional: hopefully this will be fixed later in the show and these characters might get to see more exploration.

Overall, a very promising first episode.

The Bad Batch: Decommissioned

Baring the first episode of The Bad Batch this may be the best yet. Though Decommissioned doesn’t live up to some of the best episodes of Rebels or Clone Wars it does start to show the promise of this show and lay some much needed ground work; I am hoping from here on out the series can begin to turn around.

The episode is helped by not feeling villain of the week style self-contained and by progressing things from previous adventures. I thought it was nice to see the group get a base beyond the ship, and also presenting them as basically mercenaries or bounty hunters makes for some nice questions around what a soldiers purpose is.

Furthermore, I enjoyed that the show is starting to show the effects of Order 66 on the rest of the Bad Batch, with Wrecker almost giving into the conditioning after being hit on the head. I think the show desperately needs to go back to the Crosshair storyline and address it, as the group seems to have moved on from him and basically left him behind, which makes viewing them as heroes harder.

Moreover, Omega continues to be an issue with this series and one that is not seemingly getting better. The show clearly wants to mimic the parent-child style bond of the Mandalorian yet comes off as lacking and disingenuous. Nothing so far in this series has made me warm to Omega, and whenever an episode cuts to whatever she is up to, you know it is going to slow down to a boring degree.
Finally the ending tease is fine if a little obvious and baity. We don’t need constant cliff hangers to keep coming back.

Overall, better than the last few episodes, but the series still needs a lot of improvements

Minions: This Is Why Children Are Dumb

Who would have guessed that the vaguely racist lead of the Despicable Me films is the glue that is holding it all together. Yikes.

The Minions were the obvious breakout stars of the Despicable Me franchise however, what works in small doses peppered in around a wider story does not translate into being able to anchor their own film.

I found this film to be far more simplistic and childish than the previous films, which primarily aimed at kids, had enough depth and adult jokes to make both ages groups feel like they were getting something out of the film. This time here it is painfully dumb in humour and in writing, probably because the creatives thought ‘kids won’t know it’s bad’.

Moreover, the central story is so convoluted and all over the place that by the time you get to Sandra Bullock’s evil villain trying to take over from the Queen Of England, for reasons you are so lost and confused that you can’t properly regain an understanding of, and worse you don’t want to.

If I had to describe this film in a word it would be loud. It is loud and bright and there are a lot of things all happening at once to pander to the ever diminishing attention spans of children.

Overall, a definite low point for the franchise clearly brought out to try and get more milk out of the cow, but this milk is bad.

Father Of The Bride: Complaining About Having Money

I have heard a lot of people talk about this film over the years, it has achieved ‘classic’ status in some people’s eyes. However, I am not one of them.

Firstly, I did not find it funny to hear Steve Martin’s character complain about money when he is clearly very well off, not only that but we the audience are expected to feel sorry for him when his future son in law’s parents have more money than him. The privilege is staggering. For many of us owning a house like the one Martin’s character has would be a proud moment in our lives, something we dream towards, however here it is a source of shame…

Despite being a Steve Martin fan, I thought the comedy here was a little flat; comedy is subjective of course. I found myself laughing a few times, but more often than not the jokes didn’t land. I thought the whole bit about Martin Short’s character having a hard to understand accent was particularly unfunny and I was left waiting for some hidden moment of comedic brilliance when I would finally ‘get it’ yet that never came.

Overall, as far as romantic comedies go it is passable, it lacks both the heart and soul of My Big Fat Greek Wedding and the family comedy of Meet The Parents, but it will do in a pinch.

People Places Things: Fantasy And Reality Crashing Together To Create Life

This film is entirely carried by the likeable offbeat charm of Jemaine Clement. I have been a fan of Clement’s for a long time now, probably dating back to my younger years watching Flight Of The Concords, and one thing has stayed consistently the same since then and that is the likeability of this man; he can do no wrong.

That is very true here, as Clement is front and centre and has to do a lot of the heavy lifting of this film. The plot is focused on the idea of Clement’s character having to deal with and move on from his ex: highlighting the messy road he faces, with pit falls aplenty. I think this translates very well, and I thought it was the right move to not have Clement’s character be in another relationship by the end of the film; the man finally has it all together.

In terms of humour I didn’t find this film funny particularly, more charming perhaps. I was not laughing but I was smiling throughout. There are a number of scenes that are incredibly cringey to get through, I assume this is a purposeful decision on the part of the film to highlight the issues in the characters life, but they were so painful to watch I almost had to turn away.

Overall, if Clement had not been involved this film would not have been even half as good.
