Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen: The Name Says It All

A new horror series from some of the people who brought you Stranger Things.

One only needs watch the first ten minutes of this to see where it is going, and to see that it is generic. Sadly we had to sit and watch it to the end and yup it goes exactly where you would expect a modern horror series to go.

From the way the couple act you can tell they are going to be insufferable, they are stereotypical millennial or Gen Z adults, listening to true crime as they drive, overly crude and of course nursing some deep seated trauma that they spend every second stewing in.

The broader horror of the show is all about marriage and how ultimately you shouldn’t do it. It deconstructs traditional ideas about relationships and turns them into horror. As we have seen that before, the idea of subverting traditional ideas about relationships just shows how screwed up Hollywood is and how it really doesn’t even understand basic human interactions anymore.

The kindest way to describe this is Netflix slop, you will likely see about 20 other series and films just like this on the streamer if you watch it.

Overall, just bland and dull.

Daredevil Born Again Season 2 Overview: It Got Worse

So the TV show brings back Jessica Jones a fan favourite character, but why not Luke Cage because he is a deadbeat father who is out of the country working for the CIA, he shows up in the last few minutes after all the fighting is over no doubt to be emasculated next season.

The reason why Muse was barely in the show last season before being killed off was because they wanted to have Daredevil’s girlfriend take over the mantle and become a female version of the character, who was in one issue of a comic once.

Matt is overshadowed in his own show by the crime stopping adventures of Karen Page, at the end of the series he goes to jail despite being a force for good, so that next season they can give someone else the mantel of Daredevil whilst he’s gone, perhaps Electra.

The decision to not feature the Punisher this season at all, but have Dex essential serve the same purpose is a choice and and a weird one at that.

Finally having Kingpin be exiled after all he has done is ridiculous, people have died as a result of him, yet Daredevil pleds with the crowd to let him leave. It’s just dumb. It’s suicidal empathy.

As you can guess it’s bad the first half of the season was bad and this somehow got worse. Overall since the first episode of season 1 of Born Again it has been rapidly running down hill.

Stranger Things Tales From 85 Overview: A Defiled Corpse Is Given The Weekend At Bernie’s Treatment.

Netflix killed Stranger Things that is very very important to state at the top, whether it was gay Will with superpowers being the real hero, the lack of a bonus 9th episode, or the horrible documentary wherein you realise the Duffers used ChatGPT to help write episodes.

They ran it into the ground. No spin off from it could ever do well now.

However they thought going back to the hey day of the show might get around that. Let’s not talk about the fact that they couldn’t even get a single major cast member back for this.

Despite the episode lengths being shorter this felt longer than the last season that’s just how bad the pacing is. Binging it in order to get this review out relatively quickly but it was a slog.

The formula of the show is a depressing retread of the main show, nostalgia, mysteries without good answers, and Marvel-esque writing with no emotional depth.

The animation is also ugly in every possible scene.

Really the question when it comes to this is why, just why. There was no need no one wanted this.

Malcolm In The Middle Life Is Still Unfair: Hollywood Takes A Dump On The Nuclear Family.

As fans of the original run, we were excited for this.

Stevie, the kid who had a girlfriend and was clearly into women is now gay, the mystery baby from the series finale is now a how dare you they/them person, and for added diversity Malcolm has to be an interracial relationship, as Lord knows Hal and Lois is one white relationship too many.

Do we really need to go on. You know why this was bad. It wasn’t funny, it didn’t care about the original series much at all and wanted to stuff it full of the modern message, it was preachy and it talked down to its audience. This could have been something but it died a death at the hands of modern Hollywood.

The more the episodes went on you could see that this was not brought back for love, or as there was a story to tell it was brought back to preach and for the money. The issue with projects like this is that you can include characters or different races or sexualities in a natural way that doesn’t feel like it is the story, however, herein they felt the need to make it the story and to really focus on it.

Oh also Malcolm is a loser who gets told off for the first 3 episodes and then get his marriage proposal rejected in the final episode, as God forbid you can have a male character that isn’t a failure or a joke now. This show seems intent on taking any goodwill and joy and burning it in front of you.

Overall, there would have been a time seeing a beloved show like this dug up paraded around and then spat on would have elicited more of a reaction, it would have been sadder. Now it’s par for the course.

Daredevil Born Again Mid Season Breakdown: Stop Hitting It It’s Already Dead

So we defended Born Again season one when people said it was trying to be anti Trump and comment on current events, we said people were reading into it. However, at this point in the season it seems we were wrong.

Whether it is Kingpin’s red tie that he likes to wear, or the I.C.E-esque raids that are being sent in to look for Superheros in various parts of New York it is very clear they are trying to do social commentary. Daredevil is a fictional show set in a fictional world, no one wants Trump’s bad narratives in the show.

Moreover, whilst it is nice to see Jessica Jones back, we are big Krysten Ritter fans here,we wish she was given more to do. At the moment she is just there to provide sarcastic colour commentary.

Another point that is becoming increasingly clear is that this isn’t really a Daredevil show it is every other characters show and Daredevil is just sort of kind of there as well. They really are making Matt take a back seat throughout the whole of the season so far.

We won’t score this as we’ll wait for the whole season to be out for that, but at this mid season sort of point the second season doesn’t not look like it’s heading anywhere good.

Saturday Live UK: The American Take Over Of The UK

Our reviewer for this doesn’t live in the UK anymore and so had to use a VPN in order to watch it, and boy did they regret it.

One has to ask why to several key factors, firstly why did they feel that the UK needed Saturday Night Live a show that is dying in the States.

Why did they feel the need to open with an American hostess rather than you know a well known British comedian.

Why did they fill out the cast list with a group of nobodies from British comedy rather than even mid range panel show comedians that many people already know. One has to also assume there was something of a diversity quota when filling out the cast for this show as it is in no way reflective of the UK’s actual population.

To shift gears, who is this for? The kids don’t watch live TV and certainly don’t care about Saturday Night Live, and then older people will resent how this is such obvious cultural imperialism. Maybe this is for the sort of bored lonely middle age people who sit and watch Love Island every night or maybe it’s for the American ex-pats who moved to the UK to run away from Trump.

Upon watching the first episode it became clear this was a mess that should have been aborted long ago, it wasn’t funny, it didn’t have anything to say and it felt like the most corpo thing ever put on British TV.

This is the sort of show that makes you turn off midway through.

Overall, just awful.

How To Get To Heaven From Belfast Season Overview: Like Derry Girls But Older

Summary: A trio of women are brought together over the death of their friend and decide to investigate it.

The only reason many people will watch this show is because it is from the woman who created Derry Girls, which was one of the better comedy/sitcom shows of the last decade. Anyway, this is the follow up.

In many ways the lineage is both a pro and a con, it is a pro in that the show is funny, it mimics Derry Girls’ sensibilities and the banter between the women is strong. However, it also feels like a rehash and feels overly familiar to Derry Girls’ at the same time. It feels as though they are trying to replicate Derry Girls just with older characters and one self contained storyline.

The storyline around what happened to their friend, and then as the series progresses is the friend alive, and where is she etc, feels like a very generic sort of detective drama plot line that has been done before. The more the series tries to lean into the mystery aspect the more generic it feels.

There is also an incredibly needless will they won’t they romance sub-plot which takes time away from the bond between the women which is really the key focus of the show.

Overall, watchable if generic.

The Trip 1-4 Overview: Life On Earth

Summary: Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan play fictionalised versions of themselves and go on holiday together.

So we are trying something a little different here, this is the first time a writer on Another Millennial Reviewer has tried to review multiple films at the same time in one piece. It is not the first time a TV series has had multiple seasons reviewed in one piece with that rubicon being crossed last year with the Strangers Things 1-4 retrospective.

In some places the Trip came out as a series in others it was a series of films.

That said on with the show.

The Trip is a strange mix, it is a dramedy that thinks of itself as a comedy. There are funny moments in it and the two men are clearly trying to be funny doing impressions and being silly, however there is also a layered sadness to the show. This is there right from the first episode and hangs over the show. This sadness comes from loneliness and increasingly the personal circumstances of both men it makes for uncomfortable viewing at times.

One questions the appeal of this show/film outside of the UK market as if you do not have familiarity with the two men there is a number of jokes and bits that would go right over your head. For example the a-has’ that follow around Coogan due to his time as Alan Partridge may be met with glassy stairs from the American audience.

A thing to note about the series/films is that unlike other films/TV shows that revolve around the action of travel this does not show you much of the world and the locales do feel similar as the Trips go by. The only one with a real difference is the first season that travels around the north of England that has more of a gothic feel that the others really don’t. That is a key difference between something like this and say something like The Long Way Home, which does feature more travel related content and where the locations feel different, although the latter is presented as real whereas the Trip has Brydon and Coogan playing versions of themselves.

Overall, if you enjoy Coogan and Brydon then you may get something out of this, however if you’re looking for a travel show or even something that is consistently funny then this might not be the show/film for you..

The Burbs: The Neighbours Are Racist Yet Again

Summary: So for some unknown they decided to remake The Burbs, as a TV show done in the style of a Jordan Peele film. You can see where this is going can’t you.

Interracial couple, racism, social commentary etc. It’s about as subtle as a brick thrown through your window with a note attached telling you the sender hates you.

The worst part of the show is just how played out it is there is nothing new about it, the social commentary has been done before, the plot is recycled likely AI slop, and of course Keke Palmer is there as any opportunity to behave like a stereotypical black woman calls for Keke Palmer.

Who could forget it was supposed to be a comedy except anyone watching it. There have been funnier funerals.

Overall, if you have Peacock cancel it and tell them it’s because of this show.

IT Welcome To Derry Season Overview: Forgetting Who The Star Is

Summary: Years before the Losers club do battle with Pennywise a different group of kids are targeted.

In the great war between this and the finale season of Stranger Things I would say this is comfortably the winner. This was far more engaging and better done from a production stand point.

I would say the issue that the two have in common was the need for filler, there is a lot in the last season of Strangers Things that could be cut and likewise here they try and have lots of different stories going at once, which dilutes things.

I think bringing in Pennywise full in his clown form only near the end of the show was a mistake as that is who a large portion of the audience are watching for. I liked that the show dived deeper into Pennywise’s backstory even if it does lead to continuity issues. For example where were the native americans when IT reawakens in the 80s, yes some of them may have left the area at the end of the series but not all.

Secondly I think seeing the destruction of the Black Spot was cool but I might have saved it for the next season as it is one of the defining moments in Pennywise’s history.

I thought the inclusion of Halloran was a mixed bag, it was cool to see references to other King projects within the show, but also he got far too much focus for a side character.

Overall, a good if imperfect show.
