Summary: Narnia if it was written by a 40 year old leftist hipster.
So let’s get a few things out of the way, the film has woke elements, all of the stuff set in the Oregon during the early part of the film, the fact that the Bandit King, who’s black, was wrongfully kicked out of his land, the underlying themes. However for the most part you can ignore them, they aren’t as in your face as other films.
The film itself does a lot right, the animation is great and ambitious, the world building works and goes in some interesting directions, let’s lots to explore and plenty of questions to ask after the film wraps up.
The villain is quite well done in particular she is both outrightly monstrous but also has a deeply human reason for being so, however, the film does not try and say that justifies her actions, no the film still has her be the evil villain.
Overall, if you ignore the leftist sensibilities then the film is a pretty good dark fantasy film.
3/5
Pros.
The world
The villain
The animation
Cons.
The leftist messaging
Fairly bland lead characters
