Summary: We can’t even have evil animals anymore.
If you have read some of our other coverage you will no doubt be aware of the fact that Hollywood can’t seem to allow us to have a villain anymore, they must always be sympathetic. Well here even in a film about a killer hippo it’s just the same, the hippo isn’t a rampaging monster it is only attacking out of fear for its babies and is a victim of being brought to a foreign land. Can you feel the message?
Moreover, the film doesn’t end with the typical showdown you might expect it to, but rather through empathy. The lead saves the hippos young and manages to de-escalate the situation, showing that compassion is the only thing you need to survive a deadly encounter.
Overall, typical modern Hollywood propaganda about how everything is someone else’s fault and no one can ever be bad anymore not even a rampaging animal.
1/5.
Pros.
It’s so bad it’s funny at times
Cons.
The ending
Turning the creature into the real victim
The heavy handed messaging
The performances
