Fackham Hall: Jimmy Carr Becomes A Saud

Saudi Arabia’s favourite son Jimmy Carr brings back the spoof film and decides to spoof the most timely of genre’s the period film.

This film serves one purpose as far as I am concerned it shows why the parody film died and why it should not be brought back. It’s humour is juvenile and repetitive, it even has a misunderstanding of someone’s last name being what, which is the most played out joke possibly ever. The film didn’t make me laugh once. I laughed more as I saw Jimmy Carr had removed the Saudi gig from his tour schedule.

This film could be a British nasty that tarnishes our reputation, I say as a native, not as someone who lives there anymore, much like the Catherine Tate Granny movie from a few years ago. However, it ropes in some actual talent, God knows how, and manages to tarnish all of their reputation as well. You have Katherine Waterston, and Damien Lewis who both have prominent roles here, and yet will likely regret it until their dying day.

There is something also incredibly dated about fixating your mockery on a genre that is basically none existent anymore.

The Naked Gun: OJ Simpson Has Not Been This Relevant In Years

Summary

Liam Neeson proves once and for all that he can do comedy.

When I saw the trailers for this film I was doubtful, comedy doesn’t seem to work in 2025 especially not spoof films. Couple that with the fact that I’m a big fan of the original Naked Gun films, and you can see why I went into this film with incredibly low expectations.

However, I was pleasantly surprised. Not only is this film funny, but it also manages to keep alive a lot of the humour of the original trilogy. Now, I am not going to say that this film is in the same league as those films, but I will say that it had me laughing quite a bit, and I thought the chemistry between Neeson and Pamela Anderson was charming. I think the film really shines when they are on screen together.

I would say that the wider supporting cast is mostly wasted, but then again the Naked Gun films were always mainly focused on the male and female leads and their interactions, with the wider supporting police team being used sparingly.

Overall, the OJ Simpson gag was probably the best in the film.

Weird The Al Yankovic Story: Never Stop Chasing Your Accordion

Summary

A film detailing the supposed life of Weird Al Yankovic, which is also a stand up of modern Hollywood biopics.

This was one of my most anticipated films of the year, and now that I have seen it I feel somewhat disappointed. Don’t get me wrong the film is still a lot of fun and there are a number of good jokes that come about as a result of the parody, but there are also a number of problems with the film that stop it from ever being truly great.

The chief issue for me is the fact that because the film is trying to cram in so many different references and call backs to other famous biopics, and different types of biopic at that, that often the comedy of the film can range far too broadly and not land, I think the comedy is far more miss than hit. Another thing that bothered me about this film is that it leaves a lot of the best of Weird Al’s work out, maybe I have been spoilt by other musical biopics that hit you with maybe one too many songs, but here I found it was far too few.

The film is redeemed in a lot of ways by its performances, Daniel Radcliffe once again proves that he has fantastic comedy chops, Evan Rachel Wood is a scene stealer as Madonna and deserves her own spin off film and finally Toby Huss is great as Al’s disapproving dad.

Overall, fun but not as strong as it could have been.

Epic Movie: Willy Wonka In A Whole New Sinister Light

Summary

The guys behind those Movie films reunite to make a spoof of the fantasy adventure genre.

This one is going to be controversial. For many a lot of the Movie films are some of the worst ever made, if you check out worst films of all time lists all across the internet you will see the likes of this film and others within the Movie family of films gracing many of the spots, however I actually liked this film. Yes I know.

Though not all the jokes land, some come across as overly sinister or mean spirited, I did laugh at quite a few of them. Moreover, I thought a lot of the songs were strong and they stayed with me for a long time after watching, they were catchy.

None of the cast are going to win awards but they are all doing their respective shticks fairly well. I thought Crispin Glover was a delight as a sadist and perverted Willy Wonka, his scenes stole the show for me.

Overall, certainly a film that will be an acquired taste comedically, but one that has some good moments which do enough to overshadow the bad.

A Haunted House: Back In The Early 2000’s This Would Have Been Hilarious

A Haunted House is a found footage parody film directed by Michael Tiddes. The plot serves to mock the recent trend in found footage horror films, but out of that sub-genre Paranormal Activity in particular. We see happy couple Malcom (Marlon Wayans) and Kisha (Essence Atkins), move in together only to find their new home subject to demonic activity.

In some ways this film reminded me of the best parts of the early Scary Movies, it was funny and silly, and it served as an excellent lampooning of the sub-genre. However, times have changed and as have my comedic sensibilities. When I was watching the Movie films I would have been in my early teens in the late 00’s, and watching them then they were funny, and whilst this film still made me laugh a number of times I also saw a lot of the jokes as being in poor taste. There were quite a few rape jokes that made me uncomfortable, and I think don’t hold up to today’s standard.

Wayans and Atkins are both funny and each manage to hold their ground with the other. I found that they had quite a lot of good on-screen chemistry together and the comedic back and forth between them was strong and well used.

Overall, if I could ignore the rape jokes I would give this film high marks as it is a comedy film that made me laugh, which seems quite successful by what the genre sets out to do, however, those moments of uncomfortableness with off colour jokes will force it to lose marks.

Cup Of Cheer: The Vaccine, To Christmas Film Fatigue

Cup Of Cheer is a Christmas spoof comedy film directed by Jake Horowitz. The plot serves to mock the standard Christmas film, with the big city girl Mary (Storm Steenson), going to a small town to write a news story, of course while she is there she meets handsome small-town guy Chris (Alexander Oliver), and the two strike up a very obvious romance. Also they need to save the coffee shop that Chris works at/owns?

This was just what I needed, I have been watching a lot of average to bad Netflix Christmas films recently, that all follow an incredibly similar structure, and it is nice to not only see that structure be recognised here, but also mocked for just how generic it is. Someone needs to stick it to terrible Netflix and Hallmark Christmas films.

The comedy reminded me of the better ‘movie’ films. It was often absurdist and gross out but done in a smart way that actually made me laugh. A lot of the gags in the film are surprisingly strong and the commentary is of course spot on.

Despite being designed to be an anti-Christmas film, film I found that it made me feel seasonal. I enjoyed the romance between the leads, I thought it was funny and touching in equal measure. All of the romantic cliches are trotted out here and laughed at which also adds a comedic element to the romance which greatly benefits it.

Overall, the perfect remedy for anyone suffering with Christmas film fatigue.
