Let’s review James Gunn’s DCU for a moment we have a Superman film which underperforms, but just about breaks even, we have a Supergirl film that flops we have a cartoon no one watched and we have this. There is a string of cancelled or abandoned projects as well which makes it all the worse that this got made.
Now you may remember the writers of the show through the name Green Lantern was embarrassing so they just called it Lanterns this was the way they meant to go on.
Now the first episode is out of Hal Jordan, the white guy, who was the original comics Green Lantern for many years was bluntly killed off and the writers are joking to the press oh the fans will hate us. Maybe they will bring him back and have the death be a shape shifter, this then just makes this a fake out death for attention which is equally as bad.
They don’t give a toss for the fans or the comics or anything like that it is abundantly clear what they are trying to do here and that is to create race bait and focus on Jon Stewart, the black guy, in order to make a point. No doubt much like with the Watchman show the real baddy will be small town racism rather than anything more fantastical.No one in the mid west is going on and on about colonialism.
They likely think much like with Rian Johnson and Episode 8 that by throwing away the well known and well-liked character they are being clever or subverting expectations but they aren’t, it just comes off as pandering.
No doubt the series will have bad viewership ratings. House of the Dragon in its third season had in the twenties of millions in its first few days, this has had only nine million in the same time period.
